Stagings of Arthur Miller's drama of moral arrogance are rare. It calls for a large cast and probes unquestioned beliefs. The Intrepid Shakespeare/Moxie Theatre co-production has 19 actors - one, it turns out, for each witch/wizard hung at Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692. Opening night was a mix of stiff blockings and deliveries and solid efforts (especially by Kelly Iverson, Rhona Gold, and Lisel Gorrell-Getz). The playwright gives John Proctor, a farmer accused of collusion with the devil, the ultimate Catch-22: confess and live; don't, keep your good name, and hang. Sean Cox puts Proctor through an emotional inquisition, and his emotionally charged performance absolves the production's other sins.
Worth a try.
