The Cake
Bekah Brunstetter's new play exudes relevance. Though the premise seems to be taken directly from the headlines, it was apparently written long before a similar incident took place in Colorado. A young woman comes back to her Southern home town to marry her female lover and faces prejudice and conflicting emotions whenthe baker declines to cooktheir wedding cake. This is a delicately concocted script, with many real life situations woven into the context. The dialogue, in both comedic and dramatic elements, is especially effective. Directed seamlessly by Casey Stangl, the production is beautifully performed by an excellent cast, headed by the downright adorable Faith Prince, and is played on one of the best set designs seen this year, courtesy of David F. Weiner. The storybook pink cake shop is on a hydraulic platform that can move several feet upstage to accommodate two other unit sets.Critic's Pick.
