The Book of Mormon
Just became one of my all-time favorite musicals. The plot's goofy: bright-eyed Mormon teens do missionary work in Uganda, where poverty, AIDS, and a brutal General hold sway. And as in South Park, it's guaranteed to offend. But these come from innocence, for the most part, not ingrained bigotry. It's a Puck's-eye view of "what fools these adults be." The touring show at the Civic? Sets show some road-wear and the miking blurs at the edges. But the performers, the band, the choreography, are all tops. This is such an amazingly entertaining evening it's easy just to give in and enjoy -- nay, love -- the ride. A note for theater-lovers who can't afford full price tickets. The Civic has a nightly lottery. Give them your name two and a half hours before curtain; a half hour later they draw names and hand out 20 tickets for $25.00 each.
