In the Old Globe Theatre's fine production, Prospero is "Prospera," played by Kate Burton. Director Joe Dowling has peopled Prospera's island with a multi-racial cast, giving the original a 21st century update. Burton's Prospera was a passive leader, lover of books, and gentle soul. As the play progresses, anger grows in her like a virus. Will it consume her? The question's in doubt until she makes the choice. Excellent design work's a hybrid between the theatrical and the actual, the two often blurring. Robert Foxworth heads the cast as Alonso, King of Naples, and gives a master class on acting Shakespeare.Critic's Pick.
