Superior Donuts
79 Horton Plaza, San Diego
When you see the San Diego Rep's production - and I urge you to - don't stereotype Arthur Przybyszewski or Franco Wicks. On the surface they're an odd couple, but they defy categorizing. So does Tracy Letts's play, set in a run-down doughnut shop in a run-down part of Chicago. Donuts has a manic-depressive quality, spinning on a dime from blazing comedy to drama. Much credit to director Sam Woodhouse for expert shifts of mood. Robert Foxworth is excellent as Arthur, besieged hippie. Anthony B. Phillips gives Franco, a young black man who may have written the Great American Novel, a body as agile as his mind. Strong support comes from DeAnna Driscoll, Keith Jefferson, and Max Tarasov.
