Part diatribe, part secular revival, and part Anton Chekhov's The Seagull reimagined, Aaron Posner's stark comedy-drama can be overdone and grating, but also funny, touching, and refreshing, not for what it does to Chekhov, but how it slams the safe, tried-and-true theater of today. At Cygnet the audience becomes a Chekhovian character, dull and stuck and afraid to demand better theater and better lives. Bo Roddie rockets through the evening with enough energy to circle the galaxy. Local favorites Jacque Wilke and Carole Foreman shine, and Walter Murray's stillness and honesty, as old Sorn, share the author's message about loving live, warts and all, in the most genuine manner.
