Storyville
79 Horton Plaza, San Diego
Lately, San Diego's seen great ideas for musicals (bios of Sammy Davis Jr. and Charlie Chaplin) but with weak books. Include Storyville here. The musical recounts the last days of New Orleans' red-light district, in 1917, home of the hottest new music in the world. The book, by Ed Bullins and revised by director Ken Page, is static throughout Act one, waylaid by 17 songs, many isolated from the story (and often more Tin Pan Alley than Basin Street), in Act two, and concludes by tying up every loose end into a profoundly facile knot. Strong performers - Alvester Martin III, DeBorah Sharp Taylor, Natalie Wachen, who give their all - merit better material.
