Stage Kiss
In Sarah Rule's backstage comedy, the character named She hasn't done a show in 10 years. Now she's in a florid, 1930s clunker and the man cast opposite her, called He, was her all-consuming first love. There's a scene where they must kiss. Will it be "just a kiss"? Or will it become more real than real life? Ruhl always has more things beyond the things you're looking at. On the surface, Stage Kiss examines the possibilities in the title. Deeper down, she explores the notion of a parallel universe and asks: which is more real, daytime life or dreams? New Village Arts director Chelesa Kaufman stays on the surface. As He and She, John De Carlo and Amanda Morrow beam off and on. Daren Scott stars in a supporting role as Adrian Schwalbach, a director with just enough knowledge about theater to be dangerous. NVA's production has gaps, and plays long in spots. As a superficial farce, it works okay, but there's more to the script than on the stage. Worth a try.
