The Squirrels
2910 La Jolla Village Drive, San Diego, 92037
Cost: $28 - $73
Robert Askins'k world premiere comedy has the makings for a funny satire/fable about the world today as reflected in the lives of squirrels. But the opening night performance played more like notes for a second draft. Most of the play, about super-rich and super-poor squirrels, is talky. Exposition dominates, as do long, physically static stretches. Askins is fortunate to have Tony Award-winning Chjristopher Ashley directing, and a game cast (with squirrel movements down). They conceal many of the play's flaws. But not enough.
