Sons of the Prophet
Cygnet's got a winner! In Stephen Karam's "brutal comedy" just about everyone has had a sudden reversal of fortune. Many had more than one. Joseph trained for the Olympics as a runner; now his knees don't function. His father died of a heart attack, or by crashing his car to avoid a stuffed deer on the road. Vin, the all-state halfback, put the deer out there as joke; now he can't run in the Big Game. Put them, along with looney Gloria (run out of town for publishing a false book about the Holocaust), in the same room with crabby Uncle Bill and young Charles -- and somehow, amazingly, little steps toward healing begin. Credit director Rob Lufty, effective minimalist design work, and a talented ensemble cast for pushing scenes to near collapse, for etching sharp portrayals, and for making such a somber topic often impishly -- and screamingly -- funny. Critic's Pick.
