Take away the dancing, nicely choreographed by Greg Graham, take away the ebullient performances (Priscilla Lopez and Jon Rua, in particular), and Matthew Lopez's comedy-drama wouldn't pass Playwrighting 1A. The plot, about a family filled with dreams of Broadway, the demolition of their apartment complex, and the filming of West Side Story is sitcom thin, the characters likewise. The opening-night audience gave the curtain call a standing ovation. And the performers earned it. But the overall effect is a lively — albeit two hour and forty-five minute — surface, and airy nothing underneath.
