Sideways
A matter of taste because this remake of Rex Pickett's novel sends Jack and Miles on a "blowout" road trip to the Santa Inez Valley (and behave like our headline-grabbing mayor). Sex-crazed Jack (Sean Allan Krill) has a hair-trigger; morose Miles (Patrick Breen) has no firing pin. As they flee from adulthood, they imbibe gallons of vino and may, or may not, find veritas. The piece needs some rethinking, and to get quicker off the blocks. On the plus side the dialogue snaps and crackles with keeper one-liners, and director Des McAnuff finds opportunities to inject potential substance into adolescent (and sexist) boys-will-be-boys hi-jinx. [Note: due to popular demand, the La Jolla Playhouse has extended the show's run twice].
Worth a try.
