She Stoops to Conquer
Hey, this one's fun, but must close soon. Too soon. UCSD Theatre's guest director, Penny Metropulos, gives Oliver Goldsmith's popular 18th century comedy a light touch with a sure hand. Young Marlow has two personalities. Around lower class women he's as bawdy as the next bloke, at least verbally. But upper class women, like Kate Hardcastle (his arranged bride to be) fill him with horror. So the enterprising Kate dresses as a barmaid and stoops, in social class, to conquer her mute suitor. Michael Hammond and Emily Shain head a strong cast as Marlow and Kate. The period production - footlights and flats of trees and clouds conjure the era - includes "period" acting, as characters make the audience an ally with humorous asides.
Worth a try.
