She Loves Me
The insouciant charm and effervescent spirit of the Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick musical has now taken residence at Scripps Ranch Theatre. The flimsy but surprisingly sturdy story of two people who fall in love, without knowing each is the other, has been adapted over and over. Ted Leib directs the highly charged, fast moving musical. N. Dixon Fish's ingenious set's like a complicated puzzle that turns, slips, and slides into place, showing the outside and inside of the Perfume Shop, a Hungarian street, an elegant restaurant, and more. Period wigs and hairstyles are the fine work of Kat Senior-Scott. Music director Terry O'Donnell on keyboard and Grant Clarkson on bass provide strong backup work, though being onstage is most disconcerting. Taylor Magee sings with a rare purity as unabashed Amalia. Luke Monday is charming as Georg and proves to be a strong musical comedy performer.Worth a try.
