The Secret Garden
This complicated and lengthy musical tells the story of Mary Lennox, a young English orphan sent from India to the English moors, to live with relatives she has never met. This part requires a stellar young actress with great emotional depth. Sadly, Sara Mahaffey performs as if by rote. Samantha Rose Steinberg as Lily, the ghost of the heroine's dead aunt, sings with great skill, while young Jacob Farry, as the sickly Colin, steals the spotlight at every turn. And David S. Humphrey, as Archibald, essays a character with rich irony. Nadia Guevara's choreography makes good use of the small, New Village Arts stage, while Christopher Scott Murillo's gothic-tinged set serves well as the interior and garden of the dreary house on the hill.Worth a try.
