Scott Joplin's New Rag
930 Tenth Avenue, San Diego, 92101
Cost: $25 - $32
Now in its world premiere, Robert Barry Fleming's 75-minute, "fierce tragedy in one act" pays a multi-media tribute to one of the greats of American music. Called (even by himself) the "King of Ragtime," Joplin suffered exploitation, betrayal, abuse, and heartbreak. Fleming's complex form uses different kinds of storytelling but assumes the audience has at least some knowledge of Joplin. The piece moves quickly, too quickly in the early scenes, and suffered from its many, cue-thick intricacies. Fleming's solo performance could become a tour de force. On opening night, however, he was having trouble with the lines and sounds often drowned him out.
