West Side Story
Must close this Sunday. San Diego Musical Theatre's production of the musical classic is in more than capable hands. Director James Vasquez, choreographer Randy Slovacek, and music director Don Le Master deserve miles of credit for the life that leaps from the stage (and the intricate coordination behind it). Though star-crossed in the story, Jacob Caltrider's Tony and Jessica Soza's Maria are a finely matched pair. Their duets are splendid. The large supporting cast, led by Natalie Nucci's feisty Anita and Manny Fernandes' brutal Lt. Schrank, is solid all down the line. San Diego Musical Theatre is staging the show in its new home: the Spreckels Theatre. Jerome Robbins (direction and choreography), Leonard Bernstein (music), Arthur Laurents (book), and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) were a perfect fit for West Side Story. SDMT and the Spreckels look like one as well. Critic's Pick.
