Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
291 Third Avenue, Chula Vista, 91910
To be and not to be. Tom Stoppard thrusts minor characters from Hamlet center stage, while the tragedy's playing behind a wall. Like the melancholic prince of Denmark, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern struggle to find their bearings and ponder the mystery of death. At OnStage Playhouse, Paul Morgavo's funny, assured, touching Guildenstern anchors an uneven production. Pluses include Randy Coull as the Player, Steve Murdock as Polonius, and William Grazier as Rosencrantz. Though co-directed, the staging needs more polish and actors not settling for (and overplaying) the most obvious choices.
Worth a try.
