Reasons to Be Pretty
Ion Theatre's staging another top flight production! In Neil LaBute's blast-furnace of a drama, words mean different things - very different - to different people. And "beauty" is a curse that paralyzes the culture. Greg, who loses his mate of four years to a misinterpreted word, sees through the shallowness of the times and tries to rise above it. Expert direction by Claudio Raygoza. He creates an atmosphere where people are so desensitized they must scream to make a point. Strong performances by Rachel VanWormer (as an emotionally battered Steph); Jorge Rodriguez as Kent, the Alpha Predator - straight from your nearest sports bar - who believes "beauty is all"; Lynnia Shanley as Kent's wife, who doesn't realize she's been put-upon; and newcomer Steve Froelich as Greg, who must make a painful break from the status quo. Fine technical work as well, especially Raygoza's brick-walled set, which could also serve for a production of Notes From the Underground.
