Pump Up the Volume: A '90s Palooza
This almost encyclopedic revue of '90s popular music is the current offering from San Diego Musical Theatre. Created by Jon Lorenz and Colleen Kollar-Smith (co-creators of the local hitMixtape), and performed by a highly energetic band of singers and dancers, the revue encourages the audience to re-live the pop culture of the eclectic '90s. Michael McKeon's projections and set design are worth the price of admission alone for their creativity and complexity, while many of Janet Pitcher's costumes are distinctively stylish. The song segments that poke fun at almost every conceivable '90s icon are of high quality throughout the first act. In the second act, though, the creators seem to have run out of stream, and the entire production feels too long.Worth a try.
