Bob Fosse grafted - nay, jammed - a Cabaret-like scenario onto Stephen Schwartz's musical about the son of Charlemagne's quest for meaning. Diversionary Theatre and director-choreographer James Vasquez gave it a new concept: it's set in a post-apocalyptic, post-social media dungeon-museum, and the story's a cautionary tale about today's rampant, document-my-every-move narcissism. The new concept doesn't always work and the second act, as in the original, lacks the drive of the first. Performances, however, are consistently strong, especially Courtney Corey's "black magic woman," conjuring her minions and belting her numbers with a sinister soprano.
Worth a try.
