Persuasion
Young aristocratic Anne Elliot was deeply in love with Frederick Wentworth. Her godmother persuaded her to leave him because he lacked social status. Eight years later, he returns from war a national hero, still holding a grudge. Anne, one of the few protagonists in literature who doesn't change, assumes he's out of her life. Harold Taw's book for this musical version of Jane Austin's novel has a slow pace and is a tad lengthy. Director Robert Smyth and a vocally excellent Lamb's Players ensemble fill most gaps with a sprightly, inventive production. Allison Spratt Pearce shines as Anne. David S. Humphrey and Linda Libby stand out. Jeanne Reith&9;s early 19th century costumes are tops as well. A suggestion: before the show, read Smyth's informative Director's Notes. There's much more to Persuasionthan Austin's celebrated banter.Critic's Pick.
