Passion
3704 Sixth Avenue, San Diego, 92103
Cost: $33 - $39
How can "our" Giorgio abandon blonde, devoted Clara for a clutchy grotesque monster? He shouldn't if you subscribe to cultural stereotypes of love and beauty. But he does, in Stephen Sondheim's chamber opera(-ish), even has a religious experience. Ion Theatre's production is as pared down as Sondheim's story: just bare essentials in their intimate space, and elemental performances by Katie Whalley, Jason Heil, and Sandy Campbell's drab, death-warmed-over Fosca, for whom passion isn't just a feeling, it's a force of nature. Under Kim Strassburger's senstitive direction, the 100-minute piece unfolds in increasingly strange, inexorable stages - strange, that is, if one roots for storybook love.
