They Don't Talk Back
2910 La Jolla Village Drive, San Diego, 92037
Cost: $10 - $25
Culture clash in 1994 Alaska. Nick's parents are AWOL. So he moves from Juneau, where he's been raised on Hip Hop and MTV, to a small fishing village at Southeastern Alaska, where his Tilngit grandparents lay down strict rules and demand respect for a culture that seems, to him, outdated. Spiritual end emotional growth are in Nick's future. The Native Voices at the Autry production, like Frank Henry Kaash Katasse's script, beams on and off. But mostly on, thanks to Kholan Studi's riveting work as young Edward, Roman Zaragoza's as Nick, and an atmospheric soundscape that makes Alaska another on-stage character. Worth a try.
