Murder for Two
A featherweight, miniature musical/detective story: two performers, one piano. It feels out of place on the Old Globe's Donald and Darlene Shiley mainstage. Scenic designer Beowulf Boritt had to shrink the lightbulb proscenium down to size for the genre: Fluff Lite. Ian Lowe plays Marcus, a wanna-be detective. Joe Kinisian, who wrote the score, cowrote the book, plays all the suspects. What makes the evening memorable isn't the mystery or the music, it's Kinosian's tour de force artistry, flipping from one character to another at the spin of a cap or change of posture. He and Lowe play the piano with skill, even when crawling over each other to reach the keys. They'd even be funner if they slowed the pace a tad and wouldn't blur so many one-liners.Worth a try.
