Much Ado About Nothing
1363 Old Globe Way, San Diego, 92101
Cost: $30 - $92
Take away Beatrice and Benedick launching verbal salvos at each other, and Shakespeare's language throughout, Much Ado is pretty much a journeyman effort. The plots are predictable, the comic scenes (save when Dogberry malaprops) lackluster. For the Old Globe, skilled director Kathleen Marshall relocates the play in the Italian Riviera, early 1930s. Sara Topham (Beatrice) and Michael Hayden (Benedick) do ire well, but with no undercurrent of strong, positive feelings. The well-spoken cast and eye-appealing visuals make for a competent-plus production of, at best, a competent comedy.Worth a try.
