The world premiere of Quiara Alegria Hudes (book and lyrics) and Erin McKeown's (music) musical tells the reunion of Beatriz and her estranged daughter Olivia. They may not be worlds, but might be countries apart, since Beatriz faces deportation. The core conflict could not be more relevant. But the musical, which collects folks they meet along the way, and includes fantasy characters (Allen Ginsberg, Marilyn Monroe, and a Robinson Crusoe-like castaway), can be as silly at times as it is poignant. Worth a try.
