The Metromaniacs
1363 Old Globe Way, San Diego, 92101
Cost: $29 - $92
David Ives' "translaptation" of Alexis Piron's French farce, La Metromanie, dazzles with wordplay. Eighteenth century Paris has gone crazy for poetry ("verse-mania") and young Damis falls for his favorite poetess. Complications arise, multiply, then proliferate. Everyone becomes someone else. Ives' iambics (spiced with contemporary slang) are classy. The play, however, is an almost endless maze. The parts, in the script and the Old Globe production, are more interesting than the whole. Worth a try.
