The Melancholy Play
4545 Park Boulevard, San Diego, 92116
Cost: $25
InnerMission Production's dizzy,flip-flop, madcap show must close this weekend. For one of her first plays, Sarah Ruhl chose an unpromising subject, ticketwise. Melancholy is a state beyond sadness suffered by such dignitaries as Hamlet and John Keats. But Ruhl wrote it as a farce. Like, a "melancholy farce"? And she says the condition can be sexy? Director Carla Nell and a truly game cast, headed by Hannah Logan's splendid performance as Tilly, the melancholic bank teller, turn Diversionary's intimate Black Box into an emotional free-for-all. See this show and you may go home humming "come to me my melancholy baby."Critic's Pick.
