Marry Me A Little
4545 Park Boulevard, San Diego, 92116
In 1981 Craig Lucas and Norman Rene built a musical revue based on songs by Stephen Sondheim, many of them cut from his musicals. Lucas shaped them into a zodiac of love's ways: a man and a woman go from beginning to breaking up. Diversionary Theatre offers a new take on the material: three versions (man and woman, man and man, woman and woman) consider the prospect of marriage. I caught the "woman and woman" and it's a modest charmer. Sarah Errington and Mitzi Michaels run the gamut from giddy hopes to forlorn, Sondheimian dejection. Director James Vasquez orchestrates a continual flow. His choreography and Tony Houck's indefatigable piano serve every song.
Worth a try.
