Marie and Rosetta
4040 Twiggs Street, San Diego, 92110
Cost: $30 - $65
George Brant pays tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe and her protege, Marie Knight. Tharpe, who combined gospel with blues guitar, has been called the "godmother of rock-n-roll." In this overly long, overly talky piece, which takes around 40 minutes to warm up, Tharpe converts Knight from strict gospel formality to free-wheeling blues. As Tharpe, Noel Simone Wippler can belt with the best, but needs to vary her dialogue. Amaiya Holly's Marie moves from innocent to hip, an arc Holly traces in subtle stages, and concludes with "Peace in the Valley," and almost loosens the rafters.Worth a try.
