The North Coast Rep production boasts top notch actors (including Randall Dodge, who has turned 2013 into a Victory Tour of SD theater), a polished trio of musicians, and inventive design work (including Marty Burnett's inventive wayside inn set. All perform as best they can, which is quite good, in a dud. Ben Tarver's book doesn't even begin for at least 50 minutes. Around that time guests at an early 19th century inn make schemes at night that daylight will expose. Act two kicks things up a bit (as when Ron Choularton and Annie Hinton sing "Any Other Way" and when Tatiana Mac sings "Little Rag Doll"). But the tedious book and John Clifton's score feel more like an imitation than a genuine musical.
