Octavio Solis' drama about a dysfunctional Latino family, early 70s El Paso, has two mysteries: what happened to crash the car that turned sprightly young Ceci into a "vegetable"; and who is Lydia, the undocumented teenaged care-giver who can read minds and translate Ceci's grunts? Solis' canvas is large, often overwritten, and sprawling. Director Claudio Raygoza and a solid cast -- led by Jennifer Paredes as Ceci and Nadia Guevara as Lydia -- make it compelling nonetheless. Worth a try.
