The Little Mermaid
The fairy tale that earned Hans Christian Anderson immortal fame is now a stage musical that has entertainment written all over it. Moonlight Amphitheatre's production has many highpoints, but a few negative aspects make it seem an average community endeavor. Chassy Bennett, appealing as Ariel, has too strident a tone to her singing voice. Karl Warden's choreography does not soar until the rousing second act opener, "Positoovity," with a chorus of exceptionally agle "gulls." The success of the piece belongs to Randall Hickman as a flamboyantly evil Ursula, the Sea Witch. He cavorts, undulates, and camps it up withstyle and flair. Douglas Davis' Grimsby has British elegance mastered, and Cornelius Jones, Jr., pours on the comic energy as Sebastian, a royal crab.Worth a try.
