Let Me Down Easy
Closes May 15! American theater legend Anna Deavere Smith portrays 20 people she interviewed about the body, health care, death and dying. Each is so precise (down to actorly no-no's like scratching and blowing one's nose) you feel the actual person's in the room. Smith opens up ideas and issues rather than pins them down. Let Me Down moves almost musically, like a score by Schubert, from body to soul. Although it concerns the most serious subject of all, Smith marbles the piece with humor. After each monologue, she leaves a trace of the person behind - a candy-stripe sport coat, a Stetson hat, glass of red wine. They keep the speakers alive in memory, as will Smith's deeply felt, captivating performance for a long, long time.
