Lesson 443
6663 El Cajon Boulevard, Suite N, San Diego, 92115
Cost: $20 - $27
Titana Suarez-Pico's new play is either a drama sabotaged by comedy, or vice versa. In either case, a sitcom-like urge to entertain gets in the way. Cari Gonzalez is "14 going on 44. She lives in Columbus, Ohio, where her Mexican accent makes her "stick out like a sore thumb" at school. Her mother's ghost gives her lessons in diction and in life. With two exceptions, Lesson 443 is a formulaic, coming of age piece (the situations are familiar, the arguments predictable). Cari's attempt to find her voice rings true, and the ghost (nicely played by Wendy Waddell) changes from a stock character, like the others, to an avenger determined to destroy her former husband from beyond the grave.
