Marty Burnett's classy, art deco set and Sonia Lerner's stylish costumes suggest anything but farce. But Matthew Wiener directs with such stopwatch precision he's turned a fitfully funny script into a wall-to-wall steeplechase at North Coast Rep. When Tito Merelli can't perform, young Max must sing Otello. Christopher M. Williams (Max) and Bernard X. Kopsho (Tito) excel with timing and slapstick takes. A top-notch supporting cast — led by Ted Barton, Jill Drexler, and Jessica John (a dervish as Tito's jealous wife) — make Tenor one of the year's top ensemble shows.
