Legally Blonde, The Musical
New Village Arts' production proves one thing: This is legally the most romantic show in town! Love and anticipation of romance permeate the piece and the breezy, clever direction by Kristianne Kurner is a definite plus. While production elements are high caliber, including the ingenious set by Christopher Scott Murillo (although it looks East Coast throughout, even in the West Coast scenes), it is difficult to rise above the skimpy and sophomoric book by Heather Hatch. Laurence O'Keefe's songs are not much better, with the exception of "Omigod You Guys" and "Gay or European." Yet the stellar case brings it home. Danielle Levas nails the part of Elle Woods, never losing her effervescence or momentum. Sitichai Chalyahat plays her true college friend, Emmett, with insouciant charm and geniune charisma.Worth a try.
