The Last Match
1363 Old Globe Way, San Diego, 92101
Cost: $29 - $92
Russian tennis phenom Sergei Sergeyev and American superstar Tim Porter vie in the semis at the U.S. Open. As the five-set match unfolds, we go inside their heads, and also of their significant others, where troubles brew. After a while the form -- tennis, troubles, tennis -- undermines itself. Predictable dilemmas sap energy from the match (and would two world-class players even think such thoughts on center court?). Though sometimes funny, the dialogue's explanatory, and three of the four characters are little more than types. The fourth, Sergei, played by Alex Mickiewicz is such a kick whenever he's on stage the show perks up. But when he's off, the more serious scenes wane by comparison.
