Lanie Robertson's 85-minute musical-play takes place in March, 1959, two months before Billie Holiday goes to New York's Metropolitan Hospital, where she will die of complications from drugs and alcohol. Billie is miles from the legendary jazz singer. She's a wreck, in fact, who only comes back to life in her songs. Ion Theatre's opening had a "give it a week" feel; the drama felt contrived and the performers a few rehearsals away from the spontaneous urgencies of the moment. Multi-talented Cashae Monya is too young for the role, and came on too strong at first. But she delivered the biggies with a very good, at times special, effort. Worth a try.
