La Pastorela de los Alacranes
Glad tidings. Teatro Mascara Magica's multi-lingual holiday show's been a San Diego tradition for decades. After a year off, it's back at the Rep, which means that once again Max Branscomb has written a "year in review," in satirical, funny, and touching verse. A "pastorela" is the "B-plot of the Nativity," says director William A. Virchis. Innocent shepherds make their way to Bethlehem, while Lucifer and his minions harrass them with smarmy tricks and vile intent. Lucifer (full-voiced Joey Molina) assumes various guises (among them "a totalitarian with Tourettes" wearing a red baseball cap). Opening night had several technical glitches, all fixable, but Virchis' wall-to-wall direction and a sincere cast filled the Lyceum with spirit. Kenia Ramirez plays the Angel Gabriel with alert energy, and, in what has become a San Diego tradition in itself, Rhys Greene reprises his role as a madcap Moloch, demon extraordinaire.Worth a try.
