Kita y Fernanda
930 Tenth Avenue, San Diego, 92101
They grew up in the same house in McAllen, Texas, but grew apart. A legal immigrant from Mexico, Fernanda went all-in for Americanization, while her maid's daughter Kita is undocumented ("invisible" "disposable") and sees barriers wherever she turns. Playwright Tanya Saracho includes audience participation in her exploration of differences. Parts of the play are in Spanish. Those who don't know the language will feel as exluded as Kita (and in the long run, as Fernanda, since she learns to notice things she never did before). For Mo`olelo Performing Arts, Gabriela Trigo (Fernanda) and Cynthia Bastides (Kita) perform like yin and yang. Both excel individually and their tandem efforts are terrific.
