Julia
Claudio Raygoza has written and directed a theatrical tinderbox. Inspired by Strindberg's Miss Julie, the taut scenes appear ever about to catch fire. It's 1975 in Coronado. Julia wants to forgive her philandering husband, who may become President of Mexico. But things fall apart, and then she tears shards to shreds. Catalina Maynard makes crazed Julia a scorpion ever about to strike (and subtly suggests that her controlling husband's a dead ringer for the misogynistic Strindberg). New faces Jorge Rodriguez and Anyelid Meneses are first rate as the servants, Jacob (a student at UCSD) and Cristal. He projects a maze of conflicting motives; she goes way inside and becomes a stranger in a land growing stranger by the minute.
