John Ball's In the Heat of the Night
Matt Pelfrey wrote a stage adaptation of the Academy Award-winning 1967 movie, staring Sidney Poitier as Virgil Tibbs, African-American police detective extraordinaire, who solves a first class murder, much to the dismay of a racist police chief. Pelfrey's script unfolds like a movie: short scenes hit like cinematic flickers. Ion's initial performance, though capable in many ways, needed to pick up the pace, and internalize the Mississippi accents. Both are doable, given an all-star cast, talented director Francis Gercke, and high design standards. Best of show: Vimel Sephus (Tibbs) and Tom Stephenson (Chief Gillispie) begin as exact opposites. As the play unfolds and suspects come and go, the two men move toward a sense of common ground.
Worth a try.
