Big, splashy on the outside, humble and personal within, Des McAnuff's Superstar has taken the pranksterism out of the original. The show is much more reverent than ir-. And everyone's fallible, including the Nazarene. The leads — Paul Nolan (Jesus), Josh Young (Judas), and Chilina Kennedy (Magdalene) — belt songs with verve and ease. And so does everyone else. The musical is "through-composed." Songs follow songs with almost no dialogue. You could say the production is "through-directed." Scenes evolve with near constant movement. Time speeds up. Days become hours become minutes. The theatricality is extraordinary.
