Jane Austen's Emma: A Musical Romantic Comedy
She's such an inept meddler, if Emma Woodhouse had her way, every relationship in Highbury would be star-crossed. But somehow in Jane Austen's wonderful novel - and Paul Gordon's sprightly new musical - Highbury survives her shenanigans. The book moves so fast that fans of the novel can rightfully cavil. And the staging's a bit of an acquired taste, since it's so surprisingly minimal. But like Austen's dialogue, the songs are the heart of the enterprise (as when stiff Mr. Knightly reveals his love for "Emma"; or when she whispers/belts the hilarious "Have a Piece of Cake"). There's a sag, late in Act two, as the novel's many strands reconnect, but overall the production moves with spunk and polish. As Emma, Patti Murin's a charmer throughout. So's this show.
