Beth Henley has a gift for flecking grim events with comic gold. Ion Theatre gives her latest piece, about a seedy motel were the denizens go to seed violently, a humorless, unsubtle staging. Young Rosy (given her pain, her name is a one-word oxymoron) is cursed to recall a murder just before Christmas, 1964. The play, which zig-zags through time toward the inevitable, ranks among Henley's finest. The Ion production, however, doesn't come close to its usual high standards. It's hard to tell if it's the uneven acting, overly thick accents erasing key words, or the direction, but missed opportunities abound.
