Into the Woods
The Old Globe hosts this "reimagined" staging by Fiasco Theater, and they've turned Stephen Sondheim's musical about life after "happily ever after" inside-out. Instead of Broadway pizzazz, this is a humble, folksy version (the men wear suspenders and long-john tops, the women frumpy white garments, as if performing at a 19th-century barn dance rather than at the Great White Way). It's Story Theater told, it would appear, from inside a piano. Although it's longish -- the ten performers don't have the best trained voices, and it sidles toward the cute -- the approach works surprisingly well. The story and the songs are the stars, thanks to fluid ensemble acting and inventive use of props and sound effects. Not only that, all are capable musicians [note: due to popular demand, the Old Globe has extended the run of this show].
