A play and a production that linger long after the final curtain. Oya is, at the same time, a young athlete who loses a scholarship, a Yoruban folk figure, and a barren woman linked with Federico Garcia Lorca's Yerma. She is many stories at once. And the UCSD production, smartly directed by Gregory Wallace, re-creates playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney's "distant present" with a chorus that breaks into songs, robust rhythms, even a rap number, in the process joining the bare bones story of a young woman from the projects with myth, legend, and Greek tragedy.
