In the Next Room, or The Vibrator Play
Sam Woodhouse and the Rep are on a roll! After staging Tracey Letts's emotionally tricky Superior Donuts, Woodhouse has tackled Sarah Ruhl's equally quirky, 1888 "sex comedy for adults" where, thanks to the invention of electricity, sexual toys cure "hysteria." Victoria Petrovich's excellent set, antique rose and muted gold, has a living room and an "operating theater," in which Dr. Givings performs healing massages "down there." The Rep can't quite account for the one-note nature of the "other room," stage right (which may offend some), or the long second act, but the production, anchored by Francis Gercke, as the rigid M.D., and the splendid Aubrey Saverino, as his allegedly healthy wife, is terrific. The ensemble work is tops, as are Jennifer Brawn Gittings's appealing and accurate costumes, the petticoats, bustles, and corsets of which unpeel like layers of repression.
